More Student Spotlights

Awesome  Reader !

Picture
Peter,, 5th grade student of Mrs. Parsons at Hugoton Elementary School,, has earned 300 Accelerated Points for the 4th year in a row.  Currently Peter is reading the Harry Potter series "just for fun" and is on volume 5 of 7.  He really enjoys adventure books and his favorite is Eragon by C. Paolini.  He reads at night and whenever he on the bus.  Besides reading, Peter helps on the farm with harvest, mowing, raking, and feeding his pet cats.  He also plays video games and does science experiments.  Mrs. Heger's science class is his favorite at school.  Currently they are investigating owl pellets to see what they consume. Peter would like to see more mystery books on the shelves, but thinks the school's library is "a really awesome library."  Congratulations Peter!

Exceptional  Reader !!

Kaden, an,11 year-old student from Ms Cox's 5th grade class at Hugoton Elementary School,  has reached the top Accelerated Reader goal of 300 points!  Kaden is the son of Julie and has two brothers Dylan and Cole.  Kaden's favorite books are C. Paolini's Eragon series.  He also likes books dealing with all wars and military equipment, especially planes, tanks, jeeps, and weapons.  When Kaden is not reading, he enjoys watching television or playing with his brothers at their shed.  They like to ride bikes or scooters and play tag.  Kaden would like to join the Army when he is older or create video games for little children.

IMPORTANT  Student DROP-OFF & Cell-Phone Information

As we attempt to provide a more efficient and safe approach to delivering the students in the AM,,- and after consultation with the Hugoton Police Dept - we will no longer be unlocking the SW doors for student entry.  All students will need to be dropped off out front in the official 'drive' area.

ALSO - Please be aware that the use of CELLPHONES in our drop-off area greatly increases the risk for unintentional accidents.  With 400+ students entering & exiting the front doors within a brief 10 min period, we ask our patrons to be extra vigilant in their attention to our students' safety.  THANK-YOU for not using these distracting devices in our School Zone.

More 300 pt Readers

Picture
The newest earners of 300 Accelerated Reader points from Hugoton Elementary School are Hallie and Ashlyn.  Both girls are 5th grade students of Mrs. Madelyn Parsons and this is the first year either one of them have reached the top goal.  Hallie is the daughter of Rustin and Ashley  and enjoys playing with her puppies and grandmother's parakeets when she is not reading.  The daughter of Scott and Tina , Ashlyn spends her spare time with her 4-H animals and her Ball Python, Pepper.  Congratulations girls!

Consistent  Excellence!

Picture
For the second year in a row, 6th grader Jacob has earned over 300 Accelerated Reader points.  Jacob is the 12-year-old son of Jacob and Katharina and the student of Mrs. Elise Heger.  Mrs. Heger is his favorite teacher because she is nice and funny, but he loves his science class taught by Mr. Steven Mathias.  Currently he is working with two other students on a science fair project that decides which soil will grow a bean the fastest.  For any interested gardeners, Miracle Grow soil is the clear winner.  When Jacob is not reading or growing beans he enjoys soccer, football, and helping on the farm.   Congratulations Jacob!

More  AR  Excellence

Picture
Three more 6th grade students at Hugoton Elementary School have met the top goal of 300 Accelerated Reader points.  The girls are (l to r) Felecia,,daughter of Felix and Marsha;, Mary, daughter of Johan and Sara;, and Minnie, daughter of Cornelius and Justina.  All three girls love to read and have different tastes in books.  Minnie's favorite book was "Scat, " which is an ecological mystery while Mary prefers historical fiction and Felecia is a fan of "The Hunger Games."  Felecia also likes to travel and can't wait for 7th grade because of the new books she'll get to read.  Mary enjoys playing the piano and working on her computer.  Scrapbooking is a hobby of Minnie's that she learned from her sister-in-law.  All of the girls think the library at Hugoton Elementary School is full of good books to read.  Congratulations girls!

6th Math & Science Girls to Emporia

Picture
Twenty 6th grade girls attended a math and science conference at Emporia State University on March 10th. The participants spent the day fostering awareness of career opportunities in mathematics and science-related fields.   The goal is to increase young women's interest and confidence in science and mathematics.  This is the 8th year the conference has been attended by Hugoton students. Every year the girls report with enthusiasm, that they had a great time and that the workshops were fun and interesting.  In these tight economic times the participants want to express a huge thank you to the Stevens County Medical Foundation for funding the trip. Those attending were: Bailee, Brooklynn, Deana, Claire, Dallie, Caitlyn, Jaysa, Lupe, Ady, Angely, Kaysha, Marlyn, Zoe, Paige, Abril, Caitlin, Laney, Mary, JoHanna and Britta (not pictured). Parent sponsors were Amy Harper, Gwen Rawlins and Sabrina Guerrero.

Principal for the Day

Rafael Guereque, a 3rd grade student at Hugoton Elementary School spent the day of March 7th as principal as a reward for earning 200 Accelerated Reading points.  Principal Guereque is a student of Mrs. Meitler-Wood.  As principal, Mr. Guereque had several duties to attend to throughout the day.  His favorite job was to retrieve the lost soccer balls from the roof but he also helped Mrs. McBride in the library, gave out AR awards to deserving students, helped his mother in Mrs. Perry's and Mrs. Evan's early childhood classroom.  He worked very hard with supervision and unpacking boxes of new iPads with Mr. Newton.  When not performing the duties of Principal, Rafael likes to play his PSP and practice football or basketball with his friends.  His favorite book to read this year was "Army Motorcylces" because his big brother Leo is in the Army and green is his favorite color!  Thanks Principal Guereque for helping run the school for a day!

More on the COMMON CORE Standards

If you've visited the website in the last number of months, you've see the note about our District's move to the COMMON CORE Standards.  As we continue to do the hard work of aligning our curriculum to meet the expectation of the CCS, I thought it might be of interest to some to know more about them.  The following are some 'relatively' short (14 mins) videos that should help in drawing an understanding.

Elementary ELA (English/Language Arts)
Elementary Math
CCS in general
National PTA Site (not a video)

- A continued reminder that, as a school, we are collecting the following:
     Campbell's  Soup  Labels
     BoxTops  for  Education
     Pop Can  pull-tabs
     Aluminum  Cans
